Broadcast planting: If using a broadcast spreader, spread the seed at a rate of 50–60 pounds per acre for a pure stand.

Drilling: If using a no-till drill, the seeding rate is lower, at 30–40 pounds per acre.

Cover the seed: After broadcasting, use a light disc, a cultipacker, or a drag to cover the seed with soil. The ideal planting depth is about ¾ to 1 inch. This ensures good seed-to-soil contact, which is necessary for germination. 

To plant Survivor winter peas for a food plot in Central Alabama, focus on a fall planting time from September to October, prepare a firm and well-drained seedbed, and ensure the seeds are properly inoculated. 

Timing

• Best planting window: Plant in the fall between September and October.
• Wait for moisture: Planting in October is often recommended to coincide with the typical increase in fall rainfall and to avoid the drier conditions and armyworm activity that are common in September. 

Companion crops

• Create a mix: Survivor winter peas are highly palatable to deer and can be overgrazed, especially in smaller plots with high deer density. It is recommended to plant them in a mix with other cool-season annuals, such as:
• Cereal grains (oats, wheat, or rye)
• Clover
• Forage radish
• Adjust rates: When planting a mix, be sure to reduce the seeding rate for each species accordingly. 

Maintenance

• Overgrazing: If deer pressure is heavy, the plot may not survive the hunting season. Planting a larger area or a mix can help the plot withstand the pressure.
• Fertilizing: With proper inoculation and an initial application of P and K, additional nitrogen should not be necessary, but monitor the plot's health.
