To plant a Marco Polo white clover food plot in Central Alabama, focus on a fall planting season, ideally between September and November. Proper soil preparation, including a soil test, is the most critical factor for success. Marco Polo performs best in moist, well-drained soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.5.

Planting (September–November)

Planting timing is flexible but should align with moisture availability.

1. Select seed: Use a pre-inoculated Marco Polo seed for optimal performance, or inoculate it with the correct rhizobium before planting.
2. Time planting with rain: Plan to plant when rain is in the forecast. Consistent moisture is crucial for the first few weeks.
3. Broadcast seed:

1.                  Rate: Broadcast Marco Polo at 5 lbs per acre for a pure stand, or 1–2 lbs per acre if mixing with grasses.

2.                  Method: Use a hand-held or chest-mounted spreader. To ensure an even application, mix the tiny seeds with fertilizer or sand, and spread half the seed while walking in one direction, and the other half while walking perpendicularly.

4. Cover the seed: After broadcasting, press the seed into the soil. A cultipacker is ideal for this, but you can also use a drag, a roller, or even an ATV or tractor tires. The goal is a depth of only 1/8 to 1/4 inch.
