Planting and Care
- Starting Seeds: Seeds can be direct-sown in the garden 1 inch deep. For an earlier start, sow indoors in individual peat pots 3–4 weeks before the last frost date, being careful not to disturb the roots when transplanting.
- Spacing: When direct sowing, plant 4–6 seeds in hills spaced 4–5 feet apart, later thinning to the 3 strongest plants. If using a trellis, space plants about 12–18 inches apart.
- Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during the growing season. Over-fertilizing with nitrogen can lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of fruit.
- Pollination: This variety produces both male and female flowers and relies on bees for pollination. Planting bee-attracting flowers nearby can help ensure a good harvest. Poor pollination can result in misshapen fruits.
Harvest
- Days to Maturity: Typically ready for harvest in 55–65 days from seeding.
- When to Pick: Harvest when the cucumbers are dark green, firm, and about 6–8 inches long. For pickling, harvest them when smaller.
- How to Harvest: Use a knife or scissors to cut the fruit from the vine, rather than pulling, to avoid damaging the plant.
- Promote Production: Pick fruits frequently and regularly. Leaving overripe (yellowing) cucumbers on the vine signals the plant to stop producing.
