Planting
The 'Long Green Improved' is a warm-season crop that requires full sun (at least 6-8 hours daily).
  • Timing: Sow seeds directly outdoors one to two weeks after the last expected frost date in spring, ensuring both soil and air temperatures are consistently warm.
  • Method:
    • Direct Sow: Plant seeds about 1/2 inch deep. For rows, space plants 12 to 24 inches apart with rows spaced 4 to 6 feet apart. If planting in "hills," place 4-5 seeds per small mound (about a foot in diameter and three inches high) and thin to the strongest two plants later.
    • Starting Indoors: To get a head start, you can start seeds indoors in peat pots 3-4 weeks before transplanting, as cucumbers are sensitive to root disturbance.
  • Soil: This variety performs best in fertile, well-draining soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.8. Incorporating aged compost or organic matter before planting is recommended.
Care
Consistent care is essential for preventing bitter-tasting fruits and encouraging prolific yields.
  • Watering: Provide consistent and even moisture throughout the growing season, especially during flowering and fruiting. Aim for about an inch of water per week, more during hot spells, and water at the base of the plant to prevent leaf diseases.
  • Trellising: The 'Long Green Improved' is a vining plant that can reach heights of 3-5 feet. Using a trellis or support system promotes healthy growth, improves airflow, makes harvesting easier, and saves garden space.
  • Fertilizing: Cucumbers are heavy feeders. Apply a balanced fertilizer or add compost around the base of the plants every few weeks once they are established and begin flowering.
  • Pest Control: Watch for cucumber beetles, as they can spread bacterial wilt. Using floating row covers early on can help protect young plants until flowers form.
Harvesting
'Long Green Improved' cucumbers typically mature in 55 to 65 days.
  • Timing: Harvest when the fruits are dark green, firm, and between 8 to 12 inches long for slicing. For pickling, pick them when they are smaller, around 5 to 6 inches long.
  • Method: Use a sharp knife or pruning shears to cut the stem just above the fruit, avoiding pulling the fruit from the vine, which can damage the plant.
  • Frequency: Pick fruits regularly (daily if possible) to encourage the plant to produce more cucumbers throughout the season. Allowing fruits to become too large or mature will reduce overall yields and can lead to a bitter taste.
