Planting and Site Selection
  • Timing: Plant seeds or transplants outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and when the soil temperature consistently stays above 70°F. For an earlier start, seeds can be sown indoors in biodegradable pots 3-4 weeks before the last frost to minimize root disturbance during transplanting.
  • Location & Soil: Choose a site that receives full sun (at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily). The soil should be rich in organic matter, well-draining, and have a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.
  • Spacing: Sow seeds 1/2 to 1 inch deep. Space plants about 12-18 inches apart along a trellis, or in "hills" spaced 4-5 feet apart, thinning later to 1-2 strongest plants per location.
Growing and Care
  • Support: As this is a vining variety, provide a trellis or fence for support. This saves garden space, keeps the fruit clean and straight, and promotes better air circulation which helps prevent diseases.
  • Watering: Consistent moisture is crucial. Water deeply and regularly (about 1-2 inches per week) to keep the soil evenly moist. Inconsistent watering can cause bitter-tasting or misshapen fruit. Water at the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry and prevent fungal diseases.
  • Fertilizing: Amend the soil with compost or a complete fertilizer before planting. Once the vines develop runners or start to flower, side-dress with an additional nitrogen-based fertilizer.
  • Weed/Pest Control: Use organic mulches like straw to suppress weeds and retain moisture once the soil has warmed to 75°F. Watch out for pests like cucumber beetles, which can transmit bacterial wilt, and remove them immediately.
Harvesting
  • Timing: The cucumbers are typically ready to harvest in about 55 days from planting.
  • Method: Harvest the fruit when it is slender, dark green, and about 10-12 inches long.
  • Frequency: Pick regularly (every 2-3 days) to encourage the plant to continue producing more fruit. Avoid leaving large, yellowing cucumbers on the vine as this saps energy from the plant's overall production.
