Planting Instructions
Crookneck squash can be direct-seeded after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 65°F (18°C).
  • Timing: Plant outdoors in late spring or early summer, after the last frost date. Soil temperature should be between 65-85°F for optimal germination.
  • Method: Sow seeds in "hills" (small mounds of soil) or in rows.
    • Hills: Plant 4-6 seeds one inch deep in hills about 4 feet apart, thinning to 2-3 of the strongest plants per hill once they have two sets of true leaves.
    • Rows: Plant seeds one inch deep, with 18-24 inches of space between seeds and 4-6 feet between rows.
  • Soil: Use organically rich, well-drained soil, amended with compost or well-rotted manure. A soil pH of 6.0 to 6.8 is ideal.
Growing Care
Crookneck squash plants are typically bushy (not vining) and require minimal maintenance once established, provided they have the right conditions.
  • Sunlight: Ensure at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Watering: Water deeply and consistently, providing 1-2 inches of water per week. Avoid overhead watering (wetting the leaves) to reduce the risk of fungal diseases like powdery mildew; use drip irrigation or water the base of the plant.
  • Fertilizing: In healthy soil, you may not need much fertilizer beyond the initial compost. If growth is slow, side-dress monthly with a balanced organic vegetable fertilizer or compost tea, especially after the plants start to flower.
  • Pest and Disease Management: Monitor for common pests like squash bugs and cucumber beetles. Use organic methods for control, and consider using row covers early in the season to protect young plants.
Harvesting
Harvesting regularly is key to ensuring continuous production and the best flavor.
  • When to Pick: Harvest when the fruits are young and tender, typically when they are 4-6 inches long. The skin should be bright yellow and tender enough to mark with a fingernail.
  • How to Harvest: Use a knife or shears to cut the squash from the vine, leaving a short piece of stem attached if possible (though for summer squash, this is less critical than for winter squash). Do not yank the fruit from the plant, as this can damage the plant.
  • Frequency: Check plants daily or every other day, as they grow quickly in warm weather. Overgrown squash will have tough skin and large, tough seeds, and leaving them on the plant can cause it to stop producing new fruit.
