Planting Instructions
- Timing: Plant seeds or transplants outdoors only after all danger of frost has passed and the soil temperature is at least 70°F (21°C). In cooler climates, start seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost date in biodegradable pots to avoid disturbing the sensitive roots during transplanting.
- Location & Soil: Choose a location that receives 8 or more hours of full sun daily. The soil should be well-drained, sandy, or sandy loam, amended with compost or organic matter.
- Spacing: Sow seeds in hills (mounds) of 2–3 seeds, about ½ to 1 inch deep. Space hills 4–6 feet apart, with rows 6–10 feet apart, as the vines spread up to 10 feet. Thin seedlings to the strongest one or two plants per hill once true leaves appear.

Growing & Care
- Watering: Water deeply and consistently (about an inch per week) with a soaker hose or drip irrigation to keep the soil moist, but avoid getting the leaves wet, which can cause fungal diseases. Reduce watering as the fruits approach maturity to concentrate their sugar content.
- Fertilizing: Amend the soil before planting with a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) or rich compost. Side-dress with additional fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during the growing season.
- Weeds & Protection: Use organic mulches (like straw or shredded leaves) or black plastic to control weeds, retain soil moisture, and keep the developing melons off the soil to prevent rot.
- Container Growing/Trellising: 'Crimson Sweet' is a large vining variety, but it can be grown in large containers (10 gallons or more) or on a sturdy trellis if the heavy fruits are supported with a sling or netting.
HarvestingMelons typically mature in 73–88 days. Look for these key indicators of ripeness:- Tendril: The small, curly tendril on the stem closest to the fruit attachment point will turn brown and dry up.
- Ground Spot: The spot where the melon rests on the ground changes from light green or white to a rich, creamy yellow color.
- Sound: When thumped with knuckles, a ripe melon should produce a dull, hollow sound rather than a sharp, hollow ring.
- Rind Appearance: The shiny rind surface will turn a dull green color.
Cut the melon from the vine using a knife or shears, leaving a few inches of stem attached. Watermelons do not continue to ripen or get sweeter once they are cut.
