Planting Instructions
  • Timing: Plant seeds outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and the soil temperature is consistently at least 65°F (18°C), ideally between 70° and 90°F.
  • Seed Preparation: Soaking the seeds in warm water overnight before planting can improve and speed up germination.
  • Sowing: Sow seeds 1/2 to 3/4 inch deep. For direct sowing, plant them about 3-6 inches apart, later thinning the seedlings to a final spacing of 12 to 18 inches between plants.
  • Location & Soil: Choose a spot with full sun (6-8 hours daily) and fertile, well-drained soil with a neutral pH (6.5-7.0). Amending the soil with compost is recommended.
Growing Care
  • Watering: Okra needs consistent moisture, about 1 inch of water per week, especially during pod development.
  • Fertilizing: It is a heavy feeder, so fertilize with a balanced organic fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) every few weeks or side-dress with compost once plants start flowering to encourage a steady yield.
  • Weeding and Mulching: Keep the area around the plants free of weeds. Applying mulch around the base of the plants helps to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Support: Plants can grow quite tall (up to 4-6 feet or more), so providing support with stakes or planting in supported rows may be necessary in windy areas.
  • Harvesting
    • Timing: Pods are typically ready for harvest in 50-65 days after planting.
    • Size: Harvest the pods when they are young and tender, ideally 3 to 4 inches long. Pods left on the plant for too long will become tough, woody, and fibrous.
    • Frequency: During peak season, check and pick pods daily or every other day to maintain tenderness and encourage the plant to produce more.
    • Method: Use a sharp knife or pruning shears to cut the stem of the pod from the plant to avoid damage. The plants are "spineless" for easier handling, but some people still prefer to wear gloves to avoid potential skin irritation from fine hairs on the leaves and stems.
