When to Plant: Direct sow seeds outdoors in early spring, about 4–6 weeks before the last frost date, and again in late summer or early fall. They thrive in cool weather (40°F-70°F) and may bolt and become bitter in summer heat.
Where to Plant: Choose a spot with full sun and well-drained, loose soil that is free of rocks and debris. They are excellent for in-ground gardens, raised beds, or containers at least 6 inches deep.
Sowing and Spacing:
Sow seeds about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep.
Initial seed spacing should be about 1 inch apart.
Once seedlings are about 2 inches tall, thin them to 2–3 inches apart to allow the roots to develop properly. Thinnings can be eaten in salads.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Even watering is crucial for rapid growth, which prevents the roots from becoming woody or pithy. Check the top inch of soil; if dry, it's time to water.
Soil and Fertilizer: Amend the soil with organic matter or compost before planting. Since they grow quickly, heavy fertilization after planting isn't usually necessary; too much nitrogen can lead to excessive top growth and small roots.
Harvesting and Storage
Harvest Time: Cherry Belles are ready for harvest in approximately21 to 28 days. They are best when picked young, at about 3/4 inch to 1 inch in diameter.
How to Harvest: Gently wiggle one from the soil to check the size. Harvest promptly when ready, as over-ripe radishes quickly become tough, pithy, or too spicy.
Storage: Remove the green tops after harvesting to keep the roots crisp. Washed radishes can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a few weeks.
