Planting and Timing
  • Starting Indoors: Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost date in your area, as peppers require a long growing season.
  • Transplanting Outdoors: Transplant seedlings outdoors when all danger of frost has passed and both daytime temperatures are consistently warm (around 70°F-80°F) and nighttime temperatures remain above 55°F-60°F.
  • Spacing: Space plants about 18 inches apart to allow for proper growth and air circulation.
  • Container Growing: This variety grows well in containers, provided they are large enough (at least 5-10 gallons, or 12-20 inches deep and wide) and have good drainage.
Care and Maintenance
  • Sunlight: Plant in a location that receives full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day).
  • Soil: Use fertile, well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.8. Amending the soil with organic compost is beneficial.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during fruit development, providing about 1–2 inches of water per week through a slow, steady method like a drip system. Avoid overwatering or letting the roots sit in soggy soil.
  • Fertilizing: Peppers need abundant phosphorus and potassium but can produce lots of bushy growth with few fruits if given too much nitrogen. Apply a balanced organic fertilizer every 3–4 weeks, or use a high-phosphorus starter fertilizer when transplanting.
  • Support: As the plants grow 18–30 inches tall and bear heavy fruits, they may require staking or caging to provide support and keep the peppers off the ground.
  • Pruning: Pinch off the first few flowers or tiny fruits that form early on the plant to encourage a stronger overall plant structure, which leads to better production later.
  • Harvesting
The 'California Wonder' matures in approximately 75 days from transplanting.
    • Green Peppers: Peppers can be harvested when they are full-sized (about 4 inches long and wide), firm, and still green. This will encourage the plant to continue producing more fruit.
    • Red Peppers: For sweeter and more nutrient-rich peppers (high in vitamins A and C), leave them on the plant to mature fully and turn red. This process can take a couple of extra weeks.
    • Technique: Always use a sharp knife or scissors to cut the pepper from the plant, rather than pulling or twisting, to avoid damaging the brittle branches.
