Planting Instructions
  • When to Plant: Sow seeds directly outdoors in late spring after all danger of frost has passed and the soil temperature is consistently above 65°F (preferably closer to 70-75°F for optimal germination).
  • Location: Choose a sunny spot that receives full sun (at least 6 hours of sunlight daily) and has loose, well-draining soil.
  • Sowing Method: Direct sowing is recommended as lima beans do not transplant well.
  • Depth and Spacing: Plant seeds about 1 inch deep and 4 to 6 inches apart, in rows 18 to 36 inches apart.
  • Support: As a bush variety, Henderson limas are compact (growing 18-24 inches tall) and do not require a trellis or support.
Care and Maintenance
  • Watering: Provide consistent moisture, ensuring the plants get about 1 inch of water per week, especially during the flowering and pod formation stages. Water from below to avoid soaking the leaves and potentially spreading disease.
  • Soil: They prefer well-drained, nutrient-rich, loamy soil with a pH between 6.0-6.8. Avoid using nitrogen-heavy fertilizers, as beans are light feeders and can fix their own nitrogen in the soil.
  • Weeding: Be careful not to disturb the shallow roots of the plants when weeding, especially before the plants mature and shade the soil naturally.
  • Pests/Diseases: The variety is generally hardy and disease-resistant. Common pests like Mexican bean beetles can be managed with insecticidal soap. Proper spacing and air circulation will help prevent fungal diseases.
Harvesting
  • Days to Maturity: Plants typically mature and are ready for harvest in 60 to 70 days from germination.
  • For Fresh Eating: Pick the pods when they are well-filled, firm, and still a light green color. Prompt, consistent picking will encourage the plant to produce more pods over a longer season.
  • For Dry Storage: Allow the pods to remain on the plant until they become fully dry, brown, and brittle, and the seeds rattle inside.
  • Preservation: The beans are excellent for canning, freezing, or drying.
