Planting
- Starting Indoors: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date; do not direct sow into the garden.
- Planting Depth & Spacing: Plant seeds 0.25 inches deep. Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost, ensuring 24-36 inches of space between plants.
- Sunlight & Soil: Provide full sun exposure and well-draining, slightly acidic (pH 6.2-6.8) soil. Amend soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting.
Care and Maintenance
- Support: Due to their tall, vigorous growth (3-8 feet), strong support is essential. Use sturdy cages or stakes to prevent the plants from bending under the weight of the fruit.
- Watering: Maintain consistently moist soil through regular watering. Water the base of the plant to avoid wetting the leaves, which helps prevent fungal diseases.
- Pruning: Prune selectively to improve air circulation and manage the plant's height. Pinch off suckers (side branches that grow between the main stem and a leaf stem) regularly.
- Fertilizing: Tomatoes benefit from fertilizers that are higher in phosphorus and potassium rather than excessive nitrogen, which can lead to more foliage and less fruit.
Harvesting
- Harvest Atkinson tomatoes when they are a rich, bright red color, firm, and fully developed.
- Harvesting regularly using garden scissors encourages the plant to produce more fruit throughout the season.
